Monroe, Louisiana recently ranked sixth on a list of the 25 least healthy cities in the United States. What is the cause of this classification? Premature mortality rates, adult obesity rates, the number of adults without health insurance, and the poverty rate are all factors that contribute to this ranking. Rebekah Gee
, Secretary of the Department of Health Hospitals, has highlighted that Monroe residents are particularly vulnerable when it comes to lack of access to health insurance, poor health, obesity, diabetes and chronic diseases. It is estimated that more than 30,000 people in the area are uninsured. To tackle these issues, GAMA has been established as a collaboration between WHO and other UN agencies such as UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNFAP, UNICEF, UN Women, the World Bank Group and the World Food Programme (WFP). This group works to define a basic set of adolescent health indicators in order to harmonize efforts around the measurement and reporting of adolescent health. It is estimated that half of all mental health disorders in adulthood begin at age 14 but most cases go undetected and untreated. WHO works with Member States and their partners to improve the health of young people by developing evidence-based guidelines, promoting and providing recommendations for health systems that respond to adolescents, and documenting advances in adolescent health and development. The hospital offers a designated Level 3 traumatology program, a graduate medical education program, an accredited center for chest pain, and centers of excellence in the areas of obstetrics, bariatric surgery, robotic surgery, minimally invasive gynecology and breast health. One of the specific health goals of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is that by 2030 there should be universal access to sexual and reproductive health services including family planning information and education as well as integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs.
This will help ensure that all individuals have access to quality healthcare services regardless of their socio-economic status.
